Chicago Home Improvement Magazine Jan/Feb: Homefront Article – Asparagus Interiors Feature
This month, Chicago Home Improvement Magazine, featured a custom framing project I’ve been working on. An opportunity to display photographs in a fun and vintage inspired way. The custom frame allows you to use funky magnets to display your images and artwork.
Made with a magnetic steel insert, the frame was created from reclaimed wood out of old Chicago doors – by Foundre.

Chicago Tribune, May 23, 2010 – Cheap Yet Chic Updates
Leslie Mann, contributer to the Tribune, details “Easy and inexpensive ways to remodel a home on a tight budget.” Asparagus Interiors Designer, Elizabeth Marusin was interviewed regarding her work with the Grier family in Naperville. A kitchen and living room remodeling project that incorporated green design practices and sustainable materials and finishes. In this project we refinished some existing cabinetry and retooled a shelving area to accommodate their unique plants.
As quoted in the article:
Cindy Grier, of Naperville, on the other hand, wanted to update her family-room cabinetry, which was stuck in the 1980s. Her designer, Elizabeth Marusin of Asparagus Interiors Inc. in Naperville, suggested she keep the lower cabinets and replace the upper shelves with glass to showcase her exotic plants.
“We painted the cabinets off-white, gave them new hardware and added an IceStone (recycled glass) countertop,” Marusin says. “Then, we painted the trim work in the room to match. It took the room from Colonial to contemporary, kept the cabinets out of the landfill and saved money.”
Chicago Tribune, March 21, 2010 – Designers & Architects Can Save You Money
I was lucky enough to be interviewed by Chicago Tribune reporter, Kari Richardson. The article, “Designers & architects can save you money,” covered how hiring a professional to design your home renovation project can help prevent expensive home-improvement errors.
The article mentioned:
“Cindy Grier of Naperville was looking for that kind of expertise when she hired designer Elizabeth Marusin of Asparagus Interiors Inc. to assist with a kitchen and family room remodeling project.
“I don’t know how to do this kind of thing,” said Grier, who had lived in her home for 20 years with few updates before undertaking the project. “I really needed someone to help me.”
Marusin, who prides herself on her knowledge of green products, helped Grier and her husband repurpose a pair of built-in bookcases by repainting them and adding IceStone shelves for plants, a material made of recycled glass and concrete. Marusin also helped the couple save money by working their existing appliances and artwork into the space plan she developed.

Chicago Home Improvement Magazine – February 2010
Check out this month’s feature article in Chicago Home Improvement, “The Fab Floor.”
I was asked by author Kathy Kidwell, to contribute my take on what makes flooring interesting and insight into flooring trends.
I was quoted by Kidwell stating, “A well-designed floor should work cohesively with the room, incorporating the floor finish as another plane to work with,” says Elizabeth Marusin, designer with the Naperville-based Asparagus Interiors Inc. “Color, texture and pattern all play into how the floor grounds a space. A well-designed room strikes a balance between the vertical plane and the floor, making the room work as a whole.”
The article posted below can also be found in hard copy at local design stores throughout Chicago in February.

Design Trends & Tips – Green Home Design
Elizabeth Marusin, Asparagus Interiors
Easy being green: “I think we have a choice to be environmentally responsible,” Elizabeth Marusin says. Her company, Asparagus Interiors, offers design services and consultations with a decidedly green slant. “Because the products and techniques we recommend aren’t always mainstream, we’re often educating people about the unknown,” she says.
Eco-chic: Marusin suggests paint and flooring as two things to consider when going green in your own home. “Basic things like low-VOC (volatile organic compounds) paints and natural, reclaimed or sustainable flooring options make a big difference,” she asserts. “Think about longevity through both the durability of the materials and classic design. And always set project goals up front.”
Look of the future: “I’m hoping we see green building supplies become more mainstream and more stores start to carry these products readily,” Marusin says. “We need to make it worthwhile.”
Asparagus Interiors, Inc.
“I am a small business owner who is committed to providing sustainable interior design solutions to residential and commercial clients. My professional and personal commitment to sustainability is the foundation for my support of federal climate change legislation. I urge the U.S. Senate to act on this important issue this year.”
