Energy Efficient - Period Piece Lighting Fixtures

Posted by liz on Sep 11th, 2008

Looking for period piece lighting solutions that are beautiful and energy efficient?

Otis Light Fixture I’ve stumbled upon Rejuvenation Lighting and House Parts , for our mid century ranch.  We wanted a lighting fixture that fits in with the period and style of the house as well as being energy efficient using compact fluorescent bulbs.

I found Otis, and I think he’ll fit right in on our front stoop.

heirloom piece for the modern collector

Posted by liz on May 26th, 2008

I’m constantly looking for a piece, the piece of furniture that makes a statement and lasts a long time.

I’m struggling with should you purchase furniture as if it will be an heirloom or do you take the more laissez faire approach and buy with the times.

I’m really digging the benches by Scrapile . To me they are the nelson bench equivalent for environmentally conscious collectors.

Scrapile designs their furniture made of post industrial woodworking scraps and crafts new furniture. It’s a statement piece that has purpose, function, style and sustainability.

Green Cabinetry Manufacturer - Green with NV

Looking for a sustainable custom cabinetry manufacturer, local to Chicago?

I’m working on a project with Green With NV . I designed 5 custom cabinetry pieces to be manufactured using sustainably harvested woods using environmentally constructed materials and methods.

According to the site and team of employees their products feature:

  • Solid wood used is harvested from forests that practice sustainable methods.
  • Panels used to construct cabinet boxes are low or no formaldehyde, preventing toxic off gassing in your home.
  • Finishes and adhesives are low VOC and water based.
  • These products minimize environmental damage from solvents evaporating during manufacturing.
  • They also eliminate toxic chemical off gassing in your home after installation.

I’m looking forward to seeing the finished product.

Efficient Lighting am I Ready for the Change

In all honesty, it’s been a slower change than I had planned. A bulb here a bulb there, but I hadn’t done a major sweep in swapping out the light fixtures until this week.

Prompted by living a greener lifestyle, electrical bills and questions regarding lighting from friends, I’m taking a closer look and making the switch where it matters most.

E3 Living offers lots of lighting options including dimmable bulbs. Their site offers loads of environmental products that can be used daily such as cleaners, lighting, trash bags, and electronics.

Natural Cleaning

Posted by liz on Nov 9th, 2007

Since I’ve had Poppy (4wks now), I’ve been into cleaning and buying more eco-friendly products. Often using everyday products found in the home.

Discovery Logo I’m also into the Get Fresh with Sarah Snow Show. I recommend Tivo’ing the show on Discovery, she’s full of great eco-minded tips that appeal to me and many greenies alike.

Eco-minded cleaning products I’m down with:

  • Baking Soda and water - Great for getting the stains out of tubs, sinks
  • Baking Soda Dry - Gets the odor out of pet dander infused carpets
  • Vinegar and water - Acts as a cleaning agent for windows, countertops, mirrors and takes off wallpaper
  • Seventh Generation, Method and Ecos have all become new favorite products.

Now that I’m home with the girls and Maggie is getting more curious, It would be nice to replace what is toxic with the everyday.

Sweet Felt

Felt Blanket It may not be a wall tapestry, but it’s a great gift for a baby or friend and it’s very eco-friendly!

I read about Sweet Felt Goods today in the Cottage Living magazine. I was waiting at the doctor’s office for my 38 week appointment. 2 weeks until baby #2 arrives!

With that said, Sweet Felt Goods, founded by Caroline Unruh, is described as, ” good for the environment-made from recycled 100% wool sweaters.”

Wool from old sweaters is shrunk in hot water and felted together making new blankets and throws. Some are are bordered in blanket stitch with homegrown Rhode Island yarn.

The recycled sweaters make for a memorable and functional gift as the blankets can be customized with your own sweater inserts and washable.

Neat find!

Goodbye Wallpaper

Need a quick eco-friendly solution to removing old wallpaper?

Try your basic garden variety VINEGAR diluted with WATER.

Hooray, how easy is that! I used a wallpaper scoring tool. Be careful not to press to hard if scoring on drywall surfaces. Then I sprayed my water and vinegar solution about 1/3 vinegar to 2/3 warm water. Let it soak and scrape off with a little elbow grease and a scraper.

Second-Look Vinyl Wallcovering Program

Posted by liz on Jul 25th, 2007

Vinyl wallcoverings are typically associated with commercial use offering durability, long lasting and in my opinion gassy and not environmentally friendly.
LSI Wallcovering Second-Look is the first post-consumer recycling program offered by a vinyl wallcovering manufacturer. LSI Wallcovering extends their offering to the lines of Cirqa, Plexus and Versa.

According to their site, “Second-Look Retrieval Program converts reclaimed vinyl wallcovering into recycled post-consumer product. The Second-Look Recycled Wallcovering is manufactured with at least 20% recycled content, and a minimum of 10% post-consumer.”

The recycled wallcovering is made with water based inks and is recommended to be applied with low VOC / water based adhesive.

Taking a second look at vinyl may be an worth while for commercial and residential design.
