Happy Holidays from Asparagus Interiors!

Posted by liz on Dec 20th, 2009

ornamentSeasons Greetings!  Our annual holiday e-card went out this weekend wishing you all a fun and festive holiday season.  This year has proven to be full of projects that were both inspiring and creative.  Pushing my ideas further and doing more with what we have.

Emphasis on heirloom objects, renewable resources and placing priority on focal points has challenged my designs to work with your important creative goals.

Working together with a shared vision and common goal helps us create great interiors!

Wishing you all happy holidays and a prosperous new year!  Best Wishes, – Liz Marusin

Power of Presentation

Posted by liz on Dec 15th, 2009

photo(2)photoThe “power of presentation” applies to so many facets of our lifes.  We are a visual society that craves stimulus and makes decisions based on appearances.

We visited Joy Yee Noodle shop in Naperville this past weekend with our daughters.  They were instantly swayed by the visual presentation of the noodle shop’s offerings.

Can chopsticks really suspend in the air? Can a fish really stand up on a plate?  These are the fascinating visual effects in their display widows.  The menu all in asian script and photos helps us figure out what looks good as we decipher what to order.

How can this translate to your interior design?

Presentation is everything so if you have a specific style, or are hosting a friend, party or your mom for tea.  Go ahead and make it special.  Take the time to consider how your interior design reflects who you are.

Researching Naperville’s Past – Kroehler Furniture

Posted by liz on Dec 13th, 2009

KroehlerChairI ran across this Kroehler Chair offered online via Hindsvik.etsy.com. It got me thinking, how cool is this chair and can these mid-century models still be out there.

I came across a write up on the Kroehler Manufacturing Co’s past in Naperville on the Encyclopedia of Chicago.

Considering I live a stone’s throw from the building, I thought it be in my best interest to follow up on some local history.

Interesting facts from the article:

  • 1902, Peter E. Kroehler bought the Naper ville Lounge Co.
  • 1940s, Kroehler was the second-largest furniture maker in the United States.
  • 1970s, closing its historic Naperville factory in 1978 and ending its operations in the area.

Cool Ride Clean Choice Event – Ecohaus

4007774585_ef1a0eaa7a_m4007775881_7c0b433cf9_m This Cool Ride – Clean Choice show this past weekend was chilly, but proved to be a good event. I met some interesting people looking to make greener life style choices and professionals working on finding ways to make a more eco-friendly lifestyle accessible and a reality as we renovate and build our homes.  The vehicles at this show were fuel – energy efficient and encouraging.

ecohaus logo I met with Ecohaus, Lee and Ghandour Architects and Builders, a local Naperville group working to build LEED Certified and energy efficient homes.

Also working with Ecohaus, Chicago Home Improvement Magazine. Publisher, Sherry Winchester Schultz, was at the event and provided excitement and interest in green building initiatives in the Chicagoland area.

Birthday Blog – Turkish Coffee, Wicker Park, Peotone

Posted by liz on Aug 31st, 2009

IMG_0743IMG_0742IMG_0747IMG_0749 It’s that time of year again.

This year’s birthday blog took me to Chicago’s Wicker Park and out for German in Peotone.

Mo and I wanted to go “off our beaten path” and headed over to Wicker Park. We stopped for Turkish coffee, then shopping at Renegade Handmade and Threadless Kids for tshirts.

IMG_0761IMG_0758IMG_0757The Bier Stube, in Peotone, is my favorite to place for birthday dinner.  German faire, music and beer garden can’t be beat for the fun and lively atmosphere.

Holland MI Vacation + Design Finds

Posted by liz on Aug 16th, 2009

IMG_0723IMG_0728Just returning from a week long vacation in Holland MI.  My girls loved the beach, we loved spending time with them.

We also can’t go on vacation these days without picking up a “design find.” This trip, I found two pillows made for Herman Miller with Maharam’s Hella Jongerius – Layers fabric at the Outlet/Company Store in Zeeland, MI.

Slow Design Philosopy Taking Hold

Posted by liz on May 26th, 2009

img_0504I never realized that I practiced a certain philosophy, but after reading “Slow is the New Fast,” by Stir magazine for Sherwin Williams, I realized that I’ve always suscribed to these philosophies.

Design to me is an evolotion a build, a layering.  Textures, colors, storyies, inspriation, culture and travel.  All things that we do in our lives reflected in our environments.

The slow movement was founded on “educating and lobby for organic farming, nutrition and the use of local ingredients. Over the years, the Slow Movement has expanded into the areas of travel, shopping and, more recently, design.”

The movements 6 principles are, “reveal, expand, reflect, engage, participate, and evolve.”  Consider how the economy has slowed and we begin to value what takes time not how quickly we can get it.

My dad made the red adirondack chairs for us, I painted them and together we’ve added relaxation to our weekend routine and a slower philosophy to live by.

Sounds lovely,  a night stay in a luxe hotel.  Even better a LEED rated building.  Green design and sustainble resources make the Hotel Felix a Silver.  Reported by Contract Magazine, “Located in Chicago, the Hotel Felix is the city’s first hotel designed to achieve LEED Silver certification.”

Punchy Pop Art

Looking for that punchy pop art kick this season.  Freshen up with some really light white or misty grey walls.  Then position some pop art for color.  Whaa – la, you’ve got a graphic kick start to some eye catching artwork.  Graphic artwork is easily recognizable and the solid silhouette is remarkably eye catching. Check out Naked Decor, for pillows, artwork, clocks and a ceramic line by designer Johnathan Adler.
