Kitchen Cabinets – Sustainable Manufacturing

KCMA Logo As we strive for a greener home environment, I can’t help wonder
how green are some of the products builders are using?

We didn’t have a choice in the selection of kitchen cabinets used in our first home. After learning more about cabinet construction, I wonder about how much off gassing came from the formaldehyde emitting composite wood?

I was informed my my friend Jen over at Old Mill Kitchen Design, a Wood Mode and Brookhaven dealer, that these two lines of cabinetry are certified by the KCMA Environmental Stewardship Program (ESP).

The KCMA, Kitchen Cabinet Manufacturers Association, has created a program that provides a way for cabinet manufacturers to show their commitment to sustainability. According to their site, “Cabinet manufacturers meet certification requirements in areas such as air quality (low-formaldehyde emitting composite wood), resource management and environmental stewardship, companies are awarded the ESP seal to display on their products.”

Not only has Wood-Mode and Brookhaven earned their certification but other well know manufacturers have to name a few:

  • Aristokraft Cabinetry
  • Armstrong / Bruce
  • Dutch Made
  • Merillat
